Apple introduced the iPhone X on September 12, 2017. The iPhone X came available for pre-order on October 27, 2017, and began shipping on November 3, 2017. The iPhone X was announced alongside the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, all of which make up the 11th generation of the iPhone. While these three models are all part of the 11th generation, there are some key differences.
Apple referred to the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus as the “new generation.” In comparison, the iPhone X was referred to as the “future” and it accounted for a few firsts. The iPhone X was the first iPhone to use a bezel-less design, to use an OLED screen, and it was also the first iPhone to use Face ID instead of Touch ID. The iPhone X, on account of these new features, also became the most expensive iPhone up until that point with a starting price of $999.

iPhone X vs iPhone 12 Pro Max
Upgrading from an iPhone X to an iPhone 12 Pro Max would bring a noticeable improvement in terms of performance, and in terms of new features. The performance boost would come as a result of the newer Apple A14 Bionic chip in the 12 Pro Max. For reference, the iPhone X is powered by the Apple A11 Bionic chip. The iPhone 12 Pro Max also supports 5G network connectivity, which will be a big perk as more 5G support comes available from wireless carriers.

The available internal storage tops out at 256GB on the iPhone X, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max allows for up to 512GB of storage. But perhaps the most interesting feature update is with the camera. The front-facing camera went from a 7MP TrueDepth to a 12MP TrueDepth and that brought new features such as 4k video recording, HDR video recording, Deep Fusion, and Night Mode. The rear camera on the iPhone 12 Pro Max is a Pro 12MP camera system with an ultra-wide, wide, and telephoto camera. iPhone X | iPhone 12 | |
Processor | Apple A11 Bionic with Neural Engine | Apple A14 Bionic with Next-generation Neural Engine |

The slightly bigger size allows for an increase in display size, which goes from 5.8-inches on the iPhone X to 6.1-inches on the iPhone 12. The iPhone 12 display also has a higher resolution at 2532 x 1170 and a higher contrast ratio at 2,000,000:1.

iPhone X vs iPhone SE 2020
The iPhone SE (2020) is also known as the 2nd-generation iPhone SE. This model was released in 2020, and it is part of the 13th generation of the iPhone. This means choosing to upgrade from an iPhone X to an iPhone SE 2020 would mean skipping the 12th generation, which ultimately leads to a bigger boost in terms of daily performance. The iPhone SE 2020 is powered by the Apple A13 Bionic chip.

Of course, while you will get a boost in performance, the overall user experience will be a bit different. The iPhone SE (2020) has a home button for navigation and uses Touch ID for device security. The iPhone X uses gesture-based navigation and Face ID for device security. The iPhone SE (2020) is also a smaller phone with a smaller display, which for some may feel like a downgrade.
The display goes from 5.8-inches on the iPhone X to 4.7-inches on the iPhone SE (2020). The SE (2020) display also has a lower resolution, a lower contrast ratio, and isn’t HDR. Again, some may consider this a downgrade. Overall, the iPhone SE (2020) is a very capable phone, but this upgrade path is likely going to be selected by those who want a smaller phone, or by those who want to move from Face ID to Touch ID.

Going from the iPhone X to an iPhone XS is not going to be a common upgrade path due to them each having similar specs. The iPhone XS is part of the 12th generation, while the iPhone X is part of the 11th generation so you will see improvements in terms of performance. The iPhone XS has Apple’s A12 Bionic chip and the iPhone X has the A11 Bionic chip.
iPhone X | iPhone XS | |
Processor | Apple A11 Bionic with Neural Engine | Apple A12 Bionic with Next-generation Neural Engine |
RAM | 3GB | 4GB |

But these phones have the same specs in terms of display, and overall dimensions. The displays are each 5.8-inches, and they both measure in at 5.65 (H) x 2.79 (W) x 0.30 (D). Both models have 64GB and 256GB storage options, though the iPhone XS does add a 512GB option if you are looking for more storage space.
The front and rear camera setups are also nearly identical. They each have a 7MP TrueDepth camera on the front with an f/2.2 aperture and Retina flash. The rear camera setup includes a dual 12MP wide (f/1.8) and telephoto (f/2.4) array. iPhone X vs iPhone Xr
The iPhone Xr is part of the 12th generation iPhone family. This means you would be following a year-over-year upgrade path by going from the iPhone X to the iPhone Xr. Choosing this upgrade path would mean getting a bigger display, a newer and more powerful processor, and better battery life. But there are also some downsides to this upgrade path.
iPhone X | iPhone Xr | |
Processor | Apple A11 Bionic with Neural Engine | Apple A12 Bionic with Second-generation Neural Engine |

The iPhone Xr display is 1792 x 828 and 1400:1, as compared to the iPhone X at 2436 x 1125 and 1,000,000:1.
This upgrade path would also be taking a step down in camera hardware. The iPhone X has a dual 12MP wide and telephoto setup, and the iPhone Xr goes to a single 12MP wide camera. Of course, the iPhone Xr camera does add some software improvements such as Smart HDR for photos and a Portrait mode with advanced bokeh and Depth Control.

iPhone X vs iPhone 7 Plus
Upgrading from the iPhone 7 Plus to an iPhone X is a year-over-year upgrade, so you would get a decent boost in terms of performance. This boost comes as a result of going from the A10 Fusion chip to the A11 Bionic chip. But more importantly, the overall user experience will be improved due to switching from a home button with Touch ID to gesture-based navigation with Face ID.

Perks of this upgrade path include more internal storage and a bigger and higher-quality display. Interestingly, despite the display being larger on the iPhone X, the overall dimensions of the phone are smaller. The iPhone X display is 5.8-inches, and it measures 5.65 (H) x 2.79 (W) x 0.30 (D), and the iPhone 7 Plus display is 5.5-inches, and it measures 6.23 (H) x 3.07 (W) x 0.29 (D). The iPhone X display adds support for HDR and True Tone, and it has a resolution of 2436 x 1125 as compared to the 1920 x 1080 resolution on the iPhone 7 Plus.
The rear camera setups are similar with both models offering a dual 12MP wide and telephoto array. However, the iPhone X has a better aperture and more features. The aperture goes from being f/1.8 wide and f/2.8 telephoto on the 7 Plus to f/1.8 wide and f/2.4 telephoto on the iPhone X. The newer rear camera features on the iPhone X include Portrait Lighting and going from HDR to Auto HDR for photos.

Choosing this upgrade path also means a better camera experience. The rear-facing camera goes from a single 12MP wide camera on the iPhone 7 to a dual 12MP wide and telephoto camera array on the iPhone X. The added camera lens also allows for new features such as Portrait Mode, Portrait Lighting, and Auto HDR for photos. The front-facing camera goes from a 7MP FaceTime HD to a 7MP TrueDepth. While these both sound similar due to the 7MP, the iPhone X TrueDepth camera is improved due to the feature additions such as Portrait Mode and Portrait Lighting, as well as support for Animoji and Memoji.
