Price can be a big factor when it comes to deciding whether a phone is worthy of buying. And, with current-generation phones often topping the $1,000 price point, it makes sense to start looking for an older model phone as a way to save some money. But how old is too old, and does it make sense to buy an older model iPhone that is no longer being sold by Apple?
Apple announced several new items during the “Peek Performance” event that took place on March 8, 2022. The announcements included a new color for the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro, the new Mac Studio desktop computer, a Studio Display, an updated iPad Air, and for the purposes of this post – an updated iPhone SE.
Some people will say a smartphone is old and outdated as soon as a new model is released. Following this train of thought, that would mean the iPhone 12 is outdated now that Apple has released the iPhone 13. But actually, the opposite is true, and the iPhone 12 is much more appealing now that the iPhone 13 is available.
Apple offered a split release schedule with the iPhone 12 lineup. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro were released in October 2020 and the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max arrived for sale in November 2020. The iPhone 13, along with the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max were all released at the same time, in September 2021.
The iPhone 11 is the 13th generation and the iPhone 12 is the 14th generation in the Apple iPhone lineup. Apple released the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max in September 2019. The iPhone 12 lineup saw a split release, with the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro arriving in October 2020 and the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max arriving a few weeks later, in November 2020.
