Purchasing a newly released smartphone can be fun and even exciting. However, it can also be expensive. Apple recently announced the iPhone 12 lineup, which consists of the iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, and the 12 Pro Max. The prices begin at $699 for the iPhone 12 mini and climb to over $1,000 for the iPhone 12 Pro Max. As noted before — they’re expensive. But don’t worry, because Swappa is here to help you get a cheap iPhone 12.
Get an iPhone 12 for less
In reality, it’s pretty easy to get an iPhone 12 for less, and the trick is simple — sell your current phone to fund your new upgrade. Take note, we said “sell,” as opposed to “trade-in”. Apple, along with most of the major carriers will offer trade-in deals. These deals will make the process a bit simpler, but you will be trading value (read: money) for that simplicity.
To get the most value out of your current phone — which in turn means spending less on your new iPhone 12 — you’ll want to sell your current phone. The amount you get will depend on several factors, such as the model you have, the internal storage, and the condition of the phone.
There are plenty of people that hold onto a phone for three or more years, and that makes sense because, in truth, an iPhone is still very capable after a handful of years. But on the other hand, there is a perk available for those who opt to upgrade after one or two years, and that perk is a much higher resale value.
Personally, I’m in the two-year upgrade cycle and will be selling my Unlocked 128GB iPhone Xr (in good condition) to fund my brand new 256GB iPhone 12 Pro purchase. Using this as an example, I should be able to easily save a few hundred dollars on my new iPhone 12 Pro purchase. You can see the starting price of an iPhone Xr on Swappa in the graphic below.
The current Apple trade-in value for an iPhone Xr is $250. Recent Swappa sales for a good condition 128GB iPhone Xr are over $400. Sure, you’ll pay a bit to ship the phone, and there are also PayPal fees, but when all is said and done, the amount you’ll net by selling your old iPhone will be higher than what Apple will give you for a trade-in.
Once the iPhone Xr is sold, and the iPhone 12 Pro is purchased, I will likely pay just $700 for a phone that has an MSRP of $1,099. If I were to trade-in with Apple, that $1,099 phone would be closer to $850.
