May I trade in a blocked, locked, stolen, or financed device?
It depends on the partner and the device status. Each Swappa Trade-In partner sets its own rules, and those rules differ by status.
- Stolen devices are never accepted. Not by Swappa, not by any partner on our platform. Stolen devices show up on the GSMA blacklist, the IMEI is flagged, and shipping one in means an automatic denial and a possible return to the original owner. If a device was ever reported stolen, do not trade it in.
- Financed devices are case by case. If you still owe a balance through a carrier or financing plan, the device may be marked as blocked. Some partners still buy them, others do not. Pay off your balance before you ship if you can. Otherwise, check the partner's terms.
- Locked devices need to be unlocked first. This covers carrier-locked phones, an active Find My iPhone or Google account, and devices with passcodes still on. Most partners want devices fully unlocked. Sign out of iCloud, disable Find My, remove the screen passcode, and sign out of any Google or Samsung accounts.
Not sure whether your device is clean? Run it through the ESN Check FAQ to understand IMEI and ESN status first. Then read the fine print for each trade-in partner before you accept an offer. Picking the right partner up front saves time and avoids a denied trade-in.
