How do I format the system memory on my 3DS/2DS and prepare if for sale?

Please ensure that prior to sale, your Nintendo 3DS/2DS console is ready for sale by formatting the system memory of the device. All data, accounts, digital games, and any personal information on the device must be wiped prior to selling the device.

Please follow the steps below to format the system memory on your Nintendo 3DS/2DS

  • Select the System Settings icon on the HOME Menu, and tap "Open."
  • Tap "Other Settings."
  • Tap the right arrow until you reach the page containing "Format System Memory."
  • If required, enter your Parental Controls PIN.
  • Tap “OK” when asked if you are ready to connect to the Internet.
  • Once your Internet connection is confirmed, read what will be lost when formatting the system by selecting “Next.”
  • Tap "Format."
  • Tap "Format" again to erase the data.

The following information will be lost after formatting the system memory

All data in the System Memory (including friend list, Notifications, and step count) System Settings data Built-in software save data Software update data Data stored on the SD Card, with the exception of photos and videos that you've recorded, will be invalidated. Downloadable software save data All photos in the System Memory All other extra data *The link to a Nintendo Network ID and any associated Nintendo eShop licenses and funds

Formatting does not allow you to link the Nintendo Network ID to another system.

If the system does not have an Nintendo Network ID linked and is being sold or given to someone else, remove the Nintendo eShop account before formatting the System Memory. If you have linked a Nintendo Network ID to your system, your Nintendo eShop account activity will be unavailable until you link your Nintendo Network ID again. *It is not possible to set the system to a previous system menu version. Once the system has been updated, it cannot be rolled back.

How to delete a Nintendo eShop Account

Select the Nintendo eShop icon on the system's HOME menu. Scroll left and select "Settings / Other." Scroll down and select "Delete Account." Select "Delete," then select "Enter Serial Number." *Use the on-screen keyboard to enter the first 10 characters of the serial number, then select "OK" to remove the Nintendo eShop account. Note that the first two letters of the serial number must be capitalized.
