Said phone was fully functional but had a defective, essentially useless battery. Needed a phone asap so will seek to replace it on my own which is upsetting.

The phone was NOT unlocked. I had to find out the previous carrier (AT&T) and work with their cust service to unlock the phone. I was not expecting to have to do that :-(
