In the past, shopping for a newish iPhone could present some level of confusion. You would come across unlocked models and carrier models. You also had several different model numbers depending on the market or region. There are still a few different model numbers available for the iPhone 12 Pro Max — but they have been simplified. We’re also going to outline the different model numbers here in this post so you’ll know which to buy for which market or region.
This post is part of our Unlocked iPhone Buyers Guide, which covers everything you need to know when buying an unlocked iPhone.
The iPhone 12 lineup was introduced by Apple on October 13, 2020. The iPhone 12 falls in line as the 14th generation of the iPhone, and the lineup consists of the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Here in this post, we’ll be covering the different models that are available for the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
The iPhone model numbers all begin with the letter A, which is then followed by four numbers. In general, the different model numbers are for different regions or different countries. Also for reference, you can confirm an iPhone’s model number by navigating to Settings -> General -> About. From this point, you just need to tap on “Model Number” to reveal the “A” model number.
iPhone 12 Pro Max model A2342
If you are buying an iPhone 12 Pro Max to use in the United States, you’ll want to look for the A2342. Apple has this one model number available for the U.S. market and it supports the big three carriers as well as the numerous MVNO carriers that use the big three carrier networks.
Essentially, this means you will want iPhone 12 Pro Max A2342 if you are planning to use it with Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile. And to put aside any speed concerns, model A2342 supports 5G and LTE networks for these carriers. Similarly, the A2342 iPhone 12 Pro Max will work with MVNO carriers to include Mint Mobile, Cricket Wireless, US Cellular, Straight Talk, and others.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max (model A2342) supports the following bands:
- 5G NR (Bands n1, n2, n3, n5, n7, n8, n12, n20, n25, n28, n38, n40, n41, n66, n71, n77, n78, n79)
- 5G NR mmWave (Bands n260, n261)
- FDD-LTE (Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30, 32, 66, 71)
- TD-LTE (Bands 34, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 46, 48)
- CDMA EV-DO Rev. A (800, 1900 MHz)
- UMTS / HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz)
- GSM / EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
Earlier generations of the iPhone meant trying to determine which model number was supported by your specific carrier — even within the U.S. market. But things have been simplified and the iPhone 12 Pro Max has a single model number that supports all U.S. carriers. This means model number A2342 includes support for GSM and CDMA as well as 4G LTE and 5G networks.
Of course, once you venture outside the U.S. you will find additional “A” model numbers. We suspect a fair amount of Swappa buyers will be looking for the iPhone 12 Pro Max A2343, but if you live outside the U.S. or plan to spend some extended time away from the U.S. — make sure to keep reading so you know the correct model for your country or region.
