PlayStation 4 Shipping Guide

For safe packing and shipping you’ll need a box big enough to hold the PlayStation 4 console, accessories, and plenty of protective cushioning. We recommend at least an inch or two of space around each side of the contents and the shipping box you use to allow for bubble-wrap or other protective material.

Assuming you have the original box and accessories:

  • PlayStation 4 Pro weighs between 10.1 to 10.67 lbs. The original box measures 11.6 x 2.2 x 12.9 inches.
  • PlayStation 4 Slim weighs between 7.2 to 7.43 lbs. The original box 16.7 x 3.7 x 13.5 inches.

Even though the console box sizes vary by a few inches, they are all well accommodated by the same size shipping box. A 22” x 18” x 8” box is just about perfect for shipping the console, original box, and plenty of bubble-wrap to cushion everything during transit.

What you’ll need to ship your PS4:

  • Shipping box measuring 22” x 18” x 8”
  • At least 14 sq ft of thick bubble wrap
  • Packaging tape
  • Shipping label

Boxes for shipping aren’t expensive, but they’re not necessarily easy to find either. Unfortunately USPS post offices don’t offer a box in-store that will fit a large video game console. You can order almost any size box from Amazon, but you’ll want to make sure to buy in bulk. Bubble-wrap is relatively easy to find, but a full roll will cost around $5-10.

Use the bubble-wrap to surround the PlayStation on all sides with protective cushioning. Also ensure the console is secure inside the shipping box and does not slide around.

Including the weight of the recommended box and protective bubble-wrap adds about another pound (16 oz) of weight.

This makes the total shipping size and weight for a PS4 as follows:

  • PlayStation 4 Pro inside a 22” x 18” x 8” box with bubble wrap weighs about 10.67 lbs.
  • PlayStation 4 Slim inside a 22” x 18” x 8” box with bubble-wrap weighs about 8.43 lbs.

How much does it cost to ship a PS4?

Shipping a PS4 using USPS and your own materials will cost you around $64, depending on the insured value and shipping supplies. The cost of supplies (e.g. box, bubble-wrap, tape) varies, so it’s best to buy in bulk (or use an old Amazon box lying around).

Full service shipping locations, like the UPS Store and FedEx Ship Centers, can help accommodate your PS4, and provide all the packing materials and shipping services for an extra fee. It’s more expensive than doing it yourself though and you can expect to pay upwards of $90-$100 when all’s said and done.

United States Postal Service

USPS is the preferred shipping provider of most Swappa sellers. There’s always a post office, mailbox, or postal carrier nearby. Shipping costs are typically the cheapest with USPS as well. USPS Retail Ground service includes tracking, insurance, and fast 2-3 day delivery.

Shipping with UPS is a good option. My local UPS Store, for example, could ship a PS4 console for around $53, but that’s if you’re using your own packing materials (that 11 lbs 22” x 18” x 8” box and bubble wrap). If you want them to box it up for you, expect to pay closer to $100. The shipping fee includes insurance ($300 worth for this example) and can vary based on to and from zip codes.

Shipping with FedEx is another fine option as well. According to FedEx, you could ship a PS4 console for about $65 using FedEx Home Delivery (the cheapest option); that includes your own shipping materials (a 22” x 18” x 8” box and plenty of packing material) and signature confirmation (recommended). The shipping fee includes insurance ($300 worth for this example) and can vary based on to and from zip codes.

Swappa always recommends shipping with a tracking number and proper insurance to cover the value of the device. Properly insuring your console shipment will increase the costs of shipping a bit, but it’s worth the piece of mind in the rare circumstance that your shipment gets lost or damaged in transit.

All carriers handle insurance costs similarly; you pay more per $100 of value. With USPS, insurance is around $9 for $200, $15 for $300, and $21 for $400. UPS and FedEx insurance costs are similar.

Printing a shipping label

PayPal makes it easy to print a shipping label for a payment you’ve received. Here’s a screenshot of what it might look like to generate a USPS label for your MacBook.

Of course you can also fill out a shipping label by hand or get one when you drop off the package at a post office, UPS Store or FedEx Ship Center.
