Apple Battery Health: Overview

Apple’s Battery Health is available on the iPhone 6 and later, and on iOS 11.3 and later. The Battery Health screen in your iPhone has information on the maximum battery capacity and peak performance capability.

The battery health percentage starts at 100% when the iPhone is brand new. Apple has said that a “normal battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles when operating under normal conditions.” Essentially, this means that once the battery health percentage drops below 80% – Apple considers it degraded and recommends you get it replaced.

How to check Apple Battery Health status

You can check the battery health on your iPhone by navigating to Settings -> Battery -> Battery Health & Charging

Apple Battery Health: What it means on Swappa

Swappa requires all devices to be fully functional, so the iPhone Battery Health percentage is something that should be understood by all Swappa users – buyers and sellers alike.

Fully functional, as it relates to the battery, means the battery needs to properly charge and discharge. This applies to all devices listed for sale on Swappa, but things get a bit more specific for the iPhone and Apple’s Battery Health.

  • If a seller is listing an iPhone for sale on Swappa and the battery health is below 80%, or an Apple battery message is showing in the settings, this must be disclosed on the listing.

If you are a buyer and want an iPhone that is at or above a specific Battery Health percentage – you should review the listing for that detail, or reach out to the seller and ask before making your purchase.

Apple Battery Health explained: Capacity and Capability

Speaking generally, an iPhone battery’s Maximum Capacity begins at 100% and is considered functional until it drops below 80%. Apple defines the Maximum Capacity as follows:

“This is a measure of battery capacity relative to when it was new. Lower capacity may result in fewer hours of usage between charges.”

Apple recommends a battery replacement once the Battery Health drops to 79% or below, and along with the battery’s Maximum Capacity percentage, Apple also provides a bit more detail. Some of the other messages you’ll see in the Battery Health & Charging screen on your iPhone are in the Peak Performance Capability section and include:

  • Performance Is Normal: Shown when your iPhone’s battery supports normal peak performance.
  • Performance Management Applied: Shown when your iPhone experienced an unexpected shutdown because the battery was not able to deliver the needed peak performance.
  • Battery Health Unknown: Shown when the iPhone cannot determine the battery health.
  • Performance Management Turned Off: Similar to the Performance Management Applied message, however, this message appears when you manually disabled the performance management protections.
  • Battery Health Degraded: This message is shown when the Battery Health percentage drops below 80% – this is the point when Apple states the battery’s health is significantly degraded and recommends you replace the battery.
  • Important Battery Message: Shown when Apple is unable to verify if the iPhone has a genuine Apple battery. This message is found on the iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, and later.
