Inspecting a Used Lens: Fungus, Scratches & More

A used lens can be a great buy or a slow-motion disappointment depending on what’s inside the glass. Some defects are purely cosmetic; others will quietly ruin your images. This guide covers what to look for, how to test it, and which problems are worth walking away from.

The Defects That Matter

Not every imperfection in a used lens is a problem. Understanding which defects affect image quality, and which do not, is how you separate a bargain from a liability.

Fungus

Lens fungus is the defect that matters most. It grows on glass elements inside a lens, usually from prolonged storage in humid conditions. It looks like thin, spidery white threads, spots, or a web-like pattern when you hold the lens up to light.

Fungus etches into glass coatings as it grows. Even after cleaning (which requires disassembly by a technician), coating damage can cause reduced contrast, flare, and soft edges, especially when shooting into the light or at wide apertures. A lens with active fungus inside the rear element group is often not worth buying unless the price is deeply discounted and you have priced out professional cleaning.

Early-stage surface fungus on the front element, if not etched in, can sometimes be cleaned. Interior fungus between cemented elements is generally not serviceable.

Haze and Coating Bloom

Haze is a general cloudiness or milkiness in the glass that is not caused by fungus. It can come from off-gassing of internal lubricants, moisture intrusion, or coating breakdown on older lenses. Light haze near the edges has minimal effect on images. Haze covering the center of an element will lower contrast and reduce sharpness.

Coating bloom refers to degradation of the anti-reflective coatings on lens elements. It appears as a discoloration (often purple, green, or orange) on the glass surface when viewed at an angle. Mild coating wear on the front element of an older lens is common and usually has minimal practical effect. Heavy coating damage or delamination reduces contrast and increases flare.

Scratches

Front-element scratches are the most visible defect and the most over-feared. A scratch is only a problem if it covers a meaningful portion of the lens surface, is deep, or sits at the very center of the front element. Light scratches near the edge of the front element typically have no visible effect on images, because the scratched area contributes only a small fraction of the total light entering the lens.

Rear element scratches are more critical. The rear element is closer to the focal plane and sensor, meaning scratches there have a larger effect on contrast and sharpness. A scratched rear element warrants a significant price reduction.

Oil on Aperture Blades

Oil on the aperture blades is a mechanical problem. It happens when internal lubricant migrates from the helicoid or other moving parts onto the aperture mechanism. Oily blades cause the aperture to open and close sluggishly or unevenly, which means your camera cannot control exposure accurately at certain f-stop values.

Cleaning oily aperture blades requires disassembly. It is a common and fixable repair, but factor the cost into your offer.


How to Inspect Glass: The Light Test

The flashlight test is the standard way to inspect lens elements without disassembly. Do this before buying any used lens. You need a bright, narrow flashlight or the flashlight function on a phone.

Step 1: Inspect from the front.
Remove any lens caps and filters. Hold the lens so the front element faces toward you and shine the flashlight through the rear of the lens at a slight angle. Look through the front element. Move the light slowly to change the angle of incidence. Fungus, haze, and scratches will appear as the light catches them differently at different angles.

Step 2: Inspect from the rear.
Flip the lens around and shine the light through the front element. Look through the rear. This is especially important for spotting rear-element scratches and internal haze in rear element groups.

Step 3: Check the aperture blades.
With the lens set to a mid-range aperture (f/5.6 or f/8), shine the light through the front and look at the aperture blades from the rear. Look for any sheen or oiliness on the blade surfaces. Clean blades should look matte and dark.

Step 4: Look at dust.
Small dust particles are almost unavoidable in used lenses. A few specks inside a lens are a non-issue for image quality. A significant amount of dust, especially near the rear element group, is worth noting and negotiating on. It is rarely a reason to walk away on its own.

Testing Aperture Blades and Focus

Visual inspection only goes so far. Test the lens on a camera body before committing.

Aperture test. Mount the lens on a compatible body. With an electronically controlled aperture (most modern lenses), set the camera to aperture-priority mode and step through values. The aperture blades should open and close cleanly. Oil on the blades often causes the aperture to drag or fail to reach its intended stop. For lenses with manual aperture control, step through each f-stop and listen for firm, even clicks.

Focus travel. For lenses with a manual focus ring, rotate the focus ring smoothly from its minimum focus distance to infinity. It should move with consistent resistance, without grinding, rough patches, or play. A focus ring that binds at any point needs service.

Focus accuracy. Mount the lens and shoot a test frame with a high-contrast target (a newspaper page or a brick wall at a 45-degree angle) at the widest aperture. Review the result zoomed in to 100%. Focus should fall where you aimed it. A lens that consistently misses focus in one direction has a calibration issue (front-focus or back-focus). Most modern bodies can compensate with autofocus fine-tuning (AFMA or AF Fine Adjust), but a significantly off lens is worth flagging before purchase.

Image Stabilization and Autofocus Check

Image stabilization (IS/VR/OSS/OIS). Turn on stabilization via the lens switch or in-camera setting if applicable. Look through the viewfinder and hold the lens still while pointing at a static scene. The image should stabilize and settle. A stabilizer that makes a loud rattling sound, fails to engage, or makes the image drift erratically has a problem. A loose-sounding element that shifts when you tilt the lens is usually the IS mechanism floating freely, which is normal when the unit is off. A clunking sound or a mechanism that does not respond to activation is not normal.

Autofocus. Point the lens at a subject with good contrast and trigger autofocus. The lens should acquire focus quickly and accurately. Test both speed and noise level. Some older AF systems (screwdriver-drive lenses, early AF motors) are inherently louder than modern USM or stepping-motor lenses; compare against that design’s known behavior rather than a general standard. The AF should not hunt excessively or fail to confirm focus on a well-lit subject.

Cosmetic vs. Deal-Breaking: Where to Draw the Line

A used lens does not need to be perfect to deliver excellent images. The buying decision comes down to whether the defect affects the images you plan to make and whether the price reflects the condition.

Cosmetic issues (minor edge scratches, a few dust specks, light finish wear) should move the price but not necessarily the decision. Functional issues (center haze, rear-element scratches, oil on blades) require a meaningful discount and a clear-eyed assessment of repair cost. Deal-breakers (interior fungus with etching, stuck aperture, autofocus that will not engage) are only worth buying if the price is low enough to treat as a parts or repair project.

FAQ

Does lens fungus always ruin image quality?
Not always, but it often does and it gets worse over time. Surface fungus that has not etched into the coating can sometimes be cleaned without lasting damage. Interior fungus between elements, especially if it has grown enough to etch the coating, will typically reduce contrast and increase flare in ways that cannot be reversed. A fungus-free used lens is always preferable.

How much does a scratched front element matter?
For most scratches near the edge of the front element, the practical image quality impact is minimal to zero. A scratch covering a significant portion of the center is more serious. Rear-element scratches are more impactful than front-element scratches because of the rear element’s proximity to the image plane.

What does oil on aperture blades look like?
When you shine a light through the lens and look at the aperture blades, oily blades have a sheen or gloss rather than a matte, dark appearance. In use, oily blades cause the aperture to move sluggishly, stick at certain f-stops, or produce exposure inconsistency.

Can a camera body compensate for a lens with front-focus or back-focus issues?
Most modern camera bodies include autofocus fine-tuning (AFMA on Canon bodies, AF Fine Adjust on Nikon, or similar). This can correct minor focus offset in a specific lens. Significant focus error, especially if it is inconsistent, is harder to correct and may point to a loose focus element or worn helicoid.

Is dust inside a used lens a problem?
