Turns out the device was enrolled Apple’s MDM and was still locked /managed by an organization.

I discovered this when I reinstalled the OS upon receipt (common security/ privacy practice). Seller seemed to think that a reinstall of the OS would never have been necessary as he had setup a profile.

“… You did not need to reinstall the operating system. I had done that for you. I do not sell these without reinstalling the operating system. I included the username and password on the instructions that I sent with your MacBook air. In the future, you do not need to reinstall the os.”

It took getting swappa staff getting involved to get this breach of ToS resolved, and even then took a while to get my money back.

The only positive that remains about this was the very fast shipping…
