2016 Rose Gold 12" MacBook [!!Finnish/Swedish Keyboard Layout!!]
Hi Swappa
I purchased this machine from a private seller online. It's cosmetically perfect and works as expected. The only "drawback" is, as mentioned in the headline, that the keyboard layout is Finnish/Swedish. This wasn't mentioned in the listing that I purchased from, but there were pics (I didn't look at the pics closely enough.. lesson learned).
This was purchased for my wife, who is finding it difficult to type on it. Unfortunately, it's not just different keys, otherwise I could purchase something to lay over the keyboard. But the "return" key and left side shift key are physically different sizes to a US based keyboard.
I had considered divorcing the wife, and finding me a Finnish woman who would appreciate this machine. For now, I'm going to call that "Plan B".
I am listing it as "good" as opposed to "mint", because I'm a strong believer that once an item is removed from the box, it's technically no longer "mint". But I see no scratches on the screen, nor do I see any cosmetic defects (other than keys that look a bit different to me personally).
ONCE AGAIN... PLEASE NOTE THE PHOTOS OF THE KEYBOARD! :)

Could you list what the battery cycle count is, and also how much warranty is left? thanks
Cycle Count: 11
"Your product is covered for eligible hardware repairs and service under Apple's Limited Warranty.
Estimated Expiration Date: September 29, 2017"
Would you consider $750? I'm a little hesitant because of the keyboard, but I'm sure I could adjust.
Thoughts on compromising at $800?
I completely understand the concerns, and it's definitely a funky keyboard (for us here in the US). It's currently set up as a US keyboard, so the key to the right of the "L" will still produce a semi-colon, even tho the key doesn't look like a semi-colon.
It's not as scary as it looks. I wanted to be VERY up front about the keyboard, because obviously the person from whom I bought it was not. There are the two different sized keys (the left "shift" and the "enter"). Those will definitely take "adjusting". But other than that... in spite of what you see on the keys, as long as it remains set up in "Settings" as a US keyboard, you'll get the output that you expect.
Can you tell me what all of the keys to the right of the P and L keys do on the US layout?
Thanks!
Had to do this via text. Computer's at home with my wife.
Charlie Griefer:
hit the key to the right of the P
What’s it output?
Becky Griefer:
[
Charlie Griefer:
Hit the key to the right of the L
What’s it output?
Becky Griefer:
;
Ugh. Lost formatting on that. Sorry.
In short, to the right of the "P" outputs a "[".
To the right of the "L" outputs a ";".
Ah, sorry... didn't notice you'd said, "all" the keys. I'll be home in a couple of hours. Happy to verify at that point that the rest of the keys, while looking weird, output what you'd expect. Wife says yes, but I'd like to double check.
Charlie Griefer: ok. So looking at your regular keyboard (on the iMac)... even tho the keys on the MacBook _look_ different, they mostly output the same as the normal keyboard?
Charlie Griefer: So if you were touch-typing (typing without looking down), you’d get what you expect?
Becky Griefer: yes output seems normal
... which is what I thought... but it's been a lil' bit since I tried it, and I want to make sure.
Preliminarily, via my wife,
- first left of delete makes = and + (like regular keyboard)
- and two to the left of delete makes - and ) like reg. keyboard
- the two keys to the right of the "P" are like reg. keyboard
- one key to the right of the "L" is like reg. keyboard.
- two keys to the right of the "L" outputs a backwards ' <-- issue
So, that doesn't come out properly in the text box. It looks like a normal single tick/single quote. But it should be slanted top right to bottom left. What it outputs is actually slanted top left to bottom right (like what's to the left of the "1" key on the US keyboard). Holding "shift" does produce a double quote, tho.
As of right now, that's the only bit of difference in output.
I'm interested, but I don't think I could justify more than $750 for this one. That return key will take some getting used to, so I'm a little hung up on it.
I totally understand if that's too low, but let me know if you're interested.
so if the single quote/apostrophe button produces a backwards apostrophe, can a normal single quote/apostrophe sign be produced using this keyboard ? I'd be using an external keyboard most of the time, so I'm more concerned all the symbols won't be there then about the shift button
Just tested with an Apple Keyboard via USB. All of the keys on the external keyboard work as expected.
Is the keyboard that is attached to this Macbook retina, the Finnish/Swedish keyboard with an ISO layout, cabable of typing a normal apostrophe mark?
I'm home, and typing on it now. On the actual keyboard, not the USB keyboard.
I think my wife was incorrect about the apostrophe. It seems to be fine, on the key that I'd expect it to be on (2nd to the right of the "L"). In the screenshots above, it looks like an "A" with two dots over it. But here's what it produces with and without the shift key: ' " (single quote/apostrophe, double quote).
To expand upon the differences, there's a 3rd key to the left of the L. That is the backslash (\) and with shift, a pipe (|). On a regular keyboard, that key would be above the "return" key.
There is a key to the left of the "z" key that does back-ticks (`) and tildes (~), so that'd be the same as the key to the left of the "1" on our keyboard.
On this keyboard, that key to the left of the "1" does: § and ±
I think that outlines all of the difference.
tl;dr:
- with an external keyboard, you can do everything "normally".
- with the actual keyboard, 96.8% of the keys will function as expected, even if they have different characters on them. With some effort, you can type any character that you'd want to (including the apostrophe) ;)
I've also found, while composing this response, that it's infinitely easier if you don't look at the keys while typing :)
I can do 800$ if you are able to overnight it to Georgia today?
Wouldn't be able to get it shipped until tomorrow (Jan 10).
At $200 cheaper than the next cheapest rose gold machine, I think I'm going to stick at $800 for a bit.
The keyboard isn't terrible. I made a point of drawing attention to it because I definitely want people to be aware (unlike the person from whom I purchased it). Don't get me wrong... the 2 keys that are different sizes are an inconvenience. But I don't think they're more than a $200 inconvenience :)
Time will tell if I'm wrong :)
I completely agree with you,the keyboard isn't terrible,otherwise I wouldn't have offered $770 for a terrible device.
The problem will come when reselling the product to someone,if I don't get used to the keyboard,or in future when I plan for upgrading the system.
It's your product and you deserve the right to price it.
