Check their IOS version in Settings.
3GS updates to IOS 6.1.6
3G updates to IOS 4.2.1

Or check the model numbers.
Iphone 3G --- A1241
Iphone 3GS - A1303

To find this info go to Settings > General > About. I think.

I just want the iPhone 3G if you have one for modification purposes.
