Can you verify this is the Google edition? The Verizon version is difficult to distinguish from Google.
The only ways to tell are to check the Developer menu and make sure that the "Allow OEM Unlock" is not grayed out. Using ADB you can run adb shell getprop ro.boot.cid. The CID for Google should be all 1s. If it's VZW_001 it's Verizon.

It should work for every domestic carrier. ProjectFi operates on Sprint and T-Mobile's networks. Since Sprint is involved it will likely require adding the phone's ESN/IMEI to their CDMA network's database.
