What iPad Do I Have? How to Identify Any iPad Model

October 12, 2026 • By James Bradley in Tablets
iPad

Open Settings > General > About, and the Model Name line shows exactly which iPad you have, such as an iPad Air 11-inch (M3), with its storage listed under Capacity. If it won’t turn on, the model number on the back (or inside the charging port on newer models), plus the buttons, cameras and port, will still identify it. This guide covers each clue, from the iPad Air 2 to the iPad Pro 13-inch (M5), plus what the answer means for price and iPadOS 27 support.

Quick Answer

Go to Settings > General > About. Model Name shows your exact iPad, and tapping Model Number switches Apple’s part number to the model number (an A followed by four digits), which also tells you whether you have the Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + Cellular version. If the iPad won’t turn on, read the model number on the back cover, or inside the USB-C or Lightning port on newer models, and match it to Apple’s list or the tables below. Then check what your exact model sells for before you list it or buy one.

Check iPad Prices on Swappa

The Fastest Way: Settings > General > About

Open the Settings app, tap General, then tap About. Apple’s iPad User Guide for iPadOS 27 lists everything on that screen. These are the lines that identify your iPad:

  • Model Name: Apple’s name, such as iPad Pro 11-inch (M4). Two names differ on Swappa: Apple’s iPad (A16) is listed as the iPad (11th Gen), and the iPad mini (A17 Pro) is listed as the iPad mini (7th Gen).
  • Model Number: This line shows Apple’s part number first. Tap it and it switches to the model number. A Wi-Fi iPad (A16), for example, is A3354.
  • Serial Number: Unique to your iPad, so a buyer can confirm the tablet that arrives is the one in the listing.
  • Capacity: The built-in storage, one of the biggest factors in a used iPad’s price.
  • Network, Carrier and Cellular Data Number: These lines appear only on Wi-Fi + Cellular models.

If the iPad is stuck at setup, tap the Info button in the bottom-right corner of the Hello screen to see the serial number, according to Apple. The Finder on a Mac, or the Apple Devices app on a PC, also shows the model name under the device name, and the Devices section at account.apple.com lists iPads signed in to your Apple Account.

Find the Model Number on the Back or Inside the Port

You don’t need a working screen. Apple’s Identify your iPad model list says the model number is printed on the back cover of iPads up through the iPad Pro (M4), iPad Air (M2), iPad mini (6th generation) and iPad (10th generation).

If yours doesn’t show it on the back, Apple’s model number instructions say to look inside the USB-C or Lightning connector, on the side facing the display, under bright light. Apple’s list gives no back-cover location for its newest models, the iPad Pro (M5), iPad Air (M3) and (M4), iPad (A16) and iPad mini (A17 Pro), so check the port first on those.

Apple also says the serial number is on the back, and cellular models show the IMEI there too. Wi-Fi and cellular versions of the same iPad have different model numbers:

An iPad that won’t power on can’t be listed on Swappa, because listings must be fully functional. Get a quote for a broken tablet from Swappa Trade-In, or replace it with a used iPad.

How to Tell iPad Models Apart

If you can’t get into Settings, check four things: how it unlocks (Face ID, Touch ID in the top button, or a Home button), the port, where the front camera sits, and the rear cameras. On the newest models, the front camera sits on the long edge, which Apple calls the landscape edge. Every detail below comes from Apple’s iPad comparison page and model list.

Look-Alike iPads That Trip People Up

These look nearly identical, so Settings or the model number is the only sure answer:

  • iPad (A16) vs. iPad (10th generation): Same design, Touch ID top button, USB-C and landscape camera. Storage settles most cases: the 10th generation came in 64GB or 256GB, and the A16 in 128GB, 256GB or 512GB. On cellular models, the 10th generation has a nano-SIM tray on the right side, while the A16 is eSIM only.
  • iPad Air (M2) vs. (M3) vs. (M4): Apple describes all three the same way on the outside. Use Model Name or the model number: a Wi-Fi 11-inch model is A2902 for the M2, A3266 for the M3 and A3459 for the M4.
  • iPad Pro (M4) vs. (M5): Same Face ID design, cameras and 256GB to 2TB storage options. The model number tells them apart: A2836 vs. A3357 for the Wi-Fi 11-inch, and A2925 vs. A3360 for the Wi-Fi 13-inch.
  • iPad mini (6th generation) vs. iPad mini (A17 Pro): Same 8.3-inch design with Touch ID in the top button and USB-C. The 6th generation came in 64GB or 256GB and has a nano-SIM tray on cellular models, while the A17 Pro came in 128GB, 256GB or 512GB and is eSIM only.
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch vs. 13-inch: The 12.9-inch models (2018 to 2022) have the front camera on the short top edge, a nano-SIM tray on cellular versions, and two rear cameras plus LiDAR from 2020 on. The 13-inch (M4) and (M5) have the camera on the landscape edge, one rear camera plus LiDAR, and eSIM only. The same split separates the 11-inch Pro (1st to 4th generation) from the 11-inch (M4) and (M5).
  • iPad (7th, 8th and 9th generation): All three are 10.2-inch with a Home button and Lightning. The 9th generation has a 12MP Ultra Wide front camera and came in 64GB or 256GB, while the 7th and 8th came in 32GB or 128GB. This one matters, because iPadOS 27 runs on the 9th generation but not the 8th.

Getting this right matters when you price an iPad. Swappa sale data from early October 2026 shows a 256GB iPad (11th Gen) averaging about $396, against about $353 for a 256GB iPad (10th Gen). A 128GB 11-inch iPad Air averaged about $467 for the M2, $502 for the M3 and $591 for the M4, and a 256GB iPad mini (7th Gen) about $474, against about $335 for the iPad mini (6th Gen). Prices change, so check your model before you list.

Wi-Fi or Cellular? How to Tell

Settings answers it fastest: Network, Carrier and Cellular Data Number appear under General > About only on Wi-Fi + Cellular iPads. On the hardware, older cellular models have a nano-SIM tray on the right side, and Apple says cellular iPads show an IMEI on the back. The iPad Pro (M4 and M5), iPad Air (M2 and later), iPad (A16) and iPad mini (A17 Pro) use eSIM only, so a cellular one has no tray, and the model number is your best tell: A3354 is a Wi-Fi iPad (A16), and A3355 is the cellular version. Cellular vs. Wi-Fi iPad: Which Should You Buy Used? covers carriers and whether cellular is worth paying for.

What Your Model Tells You: iPadOS 27 Support, Apple Pencil and Value

iPadOS 27 support. Apple’s iPadOS 27 compatibility list says it runs on the iPad (9th generation) and later, iPad (A16), iPad Air (4th generation) and later, iPad mini (6th generation) and later, the iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd generation) and later, and the iPad Pro 12.9-inch (4th generation) and later. Apple Intelligence needs an M1 or later chip or the iPad mini (A17 Pro). How Long Are iPads Supported With Updates? (2026) covers the models iPadOS 27 dropped and how long the rest have left.

Apple Pencil. The table’s Pencil column shows the main match: Apple Pencil Pro for the iPad Air (M2) and later, iPad Pro (M4) and later and iPad mini (A17 Pro), and Pencil (2nd generation) for older Face ID Pros, the iPad Air (4th and 5th generation) and iPad mini (6th generation). Apple’s Apple Pencil compatibility page lists every pairing, and because the iPad mini has no Smart Connector, Apple’s keyboard cases don’t fit it.

Value and battery. Model and storage set the price. Newer models, including the iPad (A16), iPad Air (M2) and later, iPad mini (A17 Pro) and iPad Pro (M4) and later, also show Battery Health under Settings > Battery, which Swappa: Understanding Apple’s Battery Health explains. For which generation to buy, see Used iPad Buyer’s Guide: Every Generation Ranked (2026), and for choosing a line, iPad vs. iPad Air vs. iPad Pro vs. iPad mini: Which Line Should You Buy Used?

Have an Android Tablet? Galaxy Tab and Fire Quick Paths

  • Samsung Galaxy Tab: Open Settings and tap About tablet to see the model name and model number, according to Samsung. In Samsung’s US store, the Galaxy Tab S11 is SM-X730, the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra is SM-X930 and the Galaxy Tab S10 FE is SM-X520. The Used Samsung Galaxy Tab Buyer’s Guide ranks the models, or browse used Galaxy Tabs.
  • Amazon Fire: Open Settings, tap Device Options, then look under Device Model or About Fire Tablet, according to Amazon’s “What Fire Tablet Do I Have?” help page. Swappa lists models such as the Fire HD 10 (2023) and Fire Max 11.

What to Do Next: Price It, Sell It, or Check a Listing

If you’re selling, find your model in the tables above and check what it has actually sold for on Swappa’s price pages. Sign out of your Apple Account and erase the iPad before you ship it, since a buyer can’t use an iPad that’s still locked to you. Activation Lock on a Used iPad: How to Avoid It explains what buyers check, and How to Sell a Used iPad or Tablet for the Most Money covers photos, pricing and shipping. Listing is free, and selling fees are lower than other auction-site fees: Swappa charges a 3% seller fee on your Ask Price, and you pay payment processing (PayPal is 3.49% + $0.49).

If you’re buying, ask the seller for the Model Name and model number from Settings > General > About, and make sure they match the listing and Apple’s model list. Real people approve Swappa listings before they go live, and if an iPad arrives as something other than what was advertised, you’re entitled to a refund.

FAQ

How do I find out which iPad I have?

Open Settings, tap General, then tap About. The Model Name line shows your exact model, such as iPad Air 11-inch (M3), and Capacity shows its storage. If the iPad won’t turn on, the model number on the back cover or inside the charging port, or its buttons, port and cameras, will identify it.

Where is the model number on an iPad?

In Settings > General > About, the Model Number line shows the part number first, and tapping it reveals the model number, an A followed by four digits. On many iPads it’s also printed on the back cover. If yours doesn’t show it on the back, Apple says to look inside the USB-C or Lightning port, on the side facing the display.

How can I tell which iPad I have if it won’t turn on?

Read the model number on the back cover or inside the charging port under bright light, then match it to Apple’s Identify your iPad model list. You can also check the Devices section at account.apple.com or the barcode on the original box. Without either, compare the unlock method, port, front camera position and rear cameras with the table in this guide.

How do I tell the iPad (A16) from the iPad (10th generation)?

They share the same design, Touch ID top button, USB-C port and landscape front camera. A 64GB iPad is the 10th generation, while a 128GB or 512GB model is the A16. Cellular 10th generation models have a nano-SIM tray, and the A16 is eSIM only. Swappa lists the A16 as the iPad (11th Gen).

Is my iPad Wi-Fi or cellular?

Open Settings > General > About. Wi-Fi + Cellular iPads show Network, Carrier and Cellular Data Number lines, and Wi-Fi models don’t. Older cellular iPads also have a nano-SIM tray on the right side, and the model number differs between the two versions, such as A3354 for a Wi-Fi iPad (A16) and A3355 for a cellular one.

Conclusion

Settings > General > About identifies any working iPad in seconds, and the model number on the back cover or inside the port identifies one that won’t turn on. Once you know the exact model, storage and whether it’s cellular, you can price it against real Swappa sales, list it, or confirm that a listing is the iPad you’re paying for.
