Photographer Spotlight: Evan Cobb

Photographer Spotlight: Evan Cobb

Photojournalists document stories that can’t be captured solely by the written word, turning fleeting moments into lasting visual experiences. These photos serve as forms of communication and can help connect communities as the imagery brings current events to life. Our next featured photographer is a skilled artist in capturing those moments. We’re excited to share more about Evan Cobb, a photojournalist for the Daily Herald in Utah.

It’s easy to see the intensity of Evan’s job, right in his photos. In the image above, Evan explained that the firefighters were in training. That fact doesn’t take away from the depth of the photo. The main subject walks toward the camera, as small flames consume his boots. Spirals of smoke swirl above the brush until they fade into the sky. The orange flames contrast against the greenery, making the photo feel like it’s alive. But the real focus goes to the firefighter, working to control the flames. The photo isn’t only a piece of art with excellent elements of composition, it also tells a story about what it takes to control a fire.

Evan was nice enough to chat with us about this photo as part of our Spotlight series, where we are highlighting photographers to help celebrate the launch of cameras on Swappa. By understanding the tech these photographers use, we hope this will provide a little insight into what goes into capturing that perfect shot.

What type of photography do you specialize in and where are you located?

I am located near Salt Lake City, but the majority of my work is photographed in Utah County, where I work for the Daily Herald, a daily newspaper that focuses on news from Utah County.

Why did you become a photographer?

I became a photographer to help share stories. I believe that photojournalism has the ability to connect individuals and groups with others that may never come into contact with them and this can help facilitate community and compassion.

If you could only bring one piece of equipment with you on a shoot, what would it be?

I would bring my Canon 5D Mark III and a 50mm lens. I find that the “nifty fifty” is a great all around lens for my needs.

Can you share about a favorite shoot and what made it memorable?

The photo that I am sharing is from some early coverage of Utah County’s wildland firefighters before the fire season kicked off in Utah. Since the firefighters were in training, I had a bit more flexibility on how close I could get to the action. I was also lucky that there was an overcast sky, which made the light act as a large softbox. When I am allowed close to the action, I like to go with a wide lens. I had my Canon 16-35mm lens on my Canon 5D Mark III. I got in front of Derek and was back pedaling through the brush as I crouched down for a low angle shot that put his head into the clean background of the sky. I find the angle and all of the layered elements make this picture.

What future piece of equipment do you have your eye on?

I am eyeing up a f/1.4 35mm and a new 24-70mm.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The people. I get to meet fascinating individuals and organizations all the time. This human connection is what it is all about.

Where’s the best place to find you online?

I am active on Instagram and this would be a great way to keep up with my work. My website is another good place to find my work.
