@Lisa S. Since the box hasn’t been opened. The warranty has not began as far as my knowledge goes. Once activated it registers to your Apple ID. And the one year limited liability will start then.
Do you happen to know the date of original purchase, ie date it left Apple inventory? Per these Apple and Apple support community links, warranty starts then. Thanks.
