2 question for you: 1) this 4th gen comes with 65w charger, but there's no reason I can't use the older 44w charger too, right? Would just be slower... and 2) have you owned this the whole time, or did you buy it from someone else used?

That's correct, any surface charger will work.
As for your second question, I'm a reseller so I'm in the business of buying and selling electronics.
That being said, the warranty from Microsoft is hassle free. If for any reason you don't believe the surface is functioning properly, Microsoft will replace it with a like new unit.
