How does the apple care work? Can it be transferred to my name or does it just transfer with the computer?

Sign in to My Support to get the AppleCare agreement number, the serial number of the device, and the proof of coverage for the AppleCare plan.
Find the original sales receipt for the device.
Get the new owner’s name, address, email address, and phone number.
Contact Apple Support.

Do you have the original receipt? I only ask because you said it was gifted to you.

Hi! Thanks for your message. So, there are two important points about Apple Care: the first is about coverage; Apple Care coverage is attached to the device, not the owner, so if you bought the laptop and needed to take it in for a repair, even without transferring ownership, that would not be an issue (I have done this before with previous devices). The other point is about ownership of Apple Care; the value of transferring ownership comes from the fact that the person whose name it is under can technically cancel coverage in order to receive a partial refund at any point if they wished. With this laptop, because a university purchased the laptop, I am not sure about the process about transferring coverage but am happy to call them to ask if this can be done. That being said, I can promise that, from my part, I would not cancel the coverage because (1) that would not be ethical and (2) I wouldn't be the recipient of the partial refund in any case.

Just spoke with Apple Customer Support; they confirmed what I mentioned earlier about not technically needing to transfer coverage ownership in order to use apple care. I am on the phone with apple right now trying to see if it would be possible to transfer ownership. Will keep you posted.

Hi, so the Apple Care specialist just let me know that because it was purchased by a university, I can't transfer ownership; that being said, he reiterated what the previous support person stated which is that the coverage is attached to the device so you would have no problem obtaining support if needed. Was wondering about some of the specs that weren't mentioned could include images of the
1) battery health and charge cycles and 2) what type of video card your model comes with.
Both of them should be under "System Information" > Hardware > Power or Graphics Display respectively

Hi Ahmed, I just lowered to $1349, which is lower than I was wanting to sell for as I also have to account for fees, shipping etc. I hope this helps; I was planning on just keeping the computer and installing windows if it didn’t sell for at least $1400, but can let it go for $1,349. In the long run, I imagine spending a little more for a mint condition computer with Apple Care and high quality accessories will be worth it. I can ship out today via FedEx or UPS if you purchase before afternoon. Cheers.
