When did this model come out, and what version of android does it currently have?

i think the tablet was released back in 2014. It is currently running android version 5.0.2 (Lollipop).

Do you happen to know if it maxes out at 5.0.2 or if it can update to something newer, like 7, 8, or 9

I don't think samsung released any updates after lollipop. However you could always install one of the lineage os rom's onto it, which are newer versions of the android os: https://wiki.lineageos.org/

One last question, how is the battery life, with what kind of use you were doing?

for a tablet this old the battery life is ok. Fortunately the battery can be replaced, and you can buy a kit online that provides the battery and tools to replace it. I used it mainly for reading pdfs, and surfing the web and also onenote works great with the included stylus. The large screen is still nice to look at and very good for reading documents.
