Nintendo Switch FAQs

Learn more before you buy a Nintendo Switch.

How much is a Nintendo Switch?

Prices for the Nintendo Switch vary depending on the model. The new retail price for the Nintendo Switch is $299, while the Switch Lite is $199, but you can find better deals on Swappa. Because buyers purchase directly from sellers, prices are typically lower than you'd find in-store.

Is the Nintendo Switch worth it?

The Nintendo Switch is one of the most popular consoles ever released. This largely has to do with the versatility of the Switch, allowing gamers to play on the TV or on-the-go. With sales outpacing popular consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One, the Nintendo Switch is a favorite amongst gamers new, old, casual and hardcore alike.

What is the difference between the Nintendo Switch and the Switch Lite?

The Nintendo Switch comes in two models — the regular Nintendo Switch and the more affordable Nintendo Switch Lite. The regular Nintendo Switch features removable controllers and dock for TV gameplay, while the Nintendo Switch Lite is exclusively for handheld gaming with a slightly smaller form factor, non-removable controllers, and no TV functionality.

Does the Nintendo Switch have Bluetooth?

The Nintendo Switch uses Bluetooth to communicate with the wireless controllers, and like other gaming consoles, it doesn't allow Bluetooth headphones to connect directly to the system. The workaround provided in the 4.0. 0 patch allows wireless headsets that use a USB dongle to provide the wireless capability.

Can I watch Netflix on a Switch?

Despite Netflix being available on previous generation Nintendo devices like the Wii, Wii U and 3DS, it's still not available on the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo originally announced that Netflix would be arriving on the Switch, but since then they've only said talks were ongoing. If you're looking to stream TV shows and movies on your Nintendo Switch, Hulu is the only official option.

How does Switch Multiplayer work?

Multiplayer on the Nintendo Switch is simple. You can wirelessly connect extra controllers (or use individual Joy-Cons are mini controllers), or you can play online with others. For online multiplayer, you'll first need to have a Nintendo Online subscription, with prices ranging from $3.99 (1 month), $7.99 (three months), $19.99 (year). For multiple accounts, there's also a family plan priced at $34.99/yr.

How do Amiibos work with the Nintendo Switch?

Amiibos are collectible figurines that can unlock additional functionality inside Nintendo Switch games. Simply place the Amiibo on top of the right Joy-Con analog stick while using a compatible game. You can also use Amiibos on the Pro Controller as well by placing them in the middle of the controller, right on top of the Nintendo logo.

How much storage does a Nintendo Switch have?

The Nintendo Switch features 32GB of internal storage which is used for game downloads and saved game data (keep in mind a small portion of that is set aside for the system). If you need additional space for game downloads, the Nintendo Switch also features expandable storage via the microSD card slot which supports cards up to 2TB. Nintendo recommends using UHS-I cards with a minimum transfer speed of 60-95 MB/sec for the best gameplay experience, just remember that game save data cannot be transferred to the SD card.

Does the Nintendo Switch support 4k?

The native resolution for the Nintendo Switch in portable handheld mode is 720p HD, and 1080p (compatible games only) when docked in TV mode. At the moment, the Nintendo Switch does not support 4K resolution, although there are unofficial 3rd party peripherals that can upscale content to 4K.

Can I play games from previous systems on the Nintendo Switch?

The Nintendo Switch isn't backwards compatible with previous systems, but a handful of previous generation Wii and Wii U games have been ported to the Nintendo Switch. Games like Mario Kart 8, Xenoblade Chronicles (Definitive Edition), Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, and more. With Nintendo Switch Online, you'll also get access to more than 60 NES and SNES classic games like Super Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Star Fox, Punch-Out!! and many more.
