Sony Xperia 1 VI
Looking to buy my first international version non- us phone. the Sony Xperia 1 VI haven’t been able to find a better price than A m a z o n. Since you can’t buy a us version but I’m wondering will I have any issues using it on A T T? I check the all the bands for att and the device to see if they have any compatible. Also checked to see Previous models Mark I-V are all on at&t’s compatible list.
US phone user here, AT&T for personal use, Verizon for work phone.
First, the Xperia DOES work, and it works with AT&T, but if your signal is spotty at all, it's not ok. I suspect it's the same for other carriers.
If you intend to use your Xperia phone to make phone calls, you will likely have some difficulty on AT&T (and probably other networks). I have an Xperia 5 iii, as does my son; my other son has an Xperia 1 ii. They make calls well enough until the signal gets spotty, where the rest of the family's other phones (Pixel, Nokia, iPhone, Samsung) work just fine.
Between work and personal phones, we've used AT&T, Verizon, & T-Mobile with phones from Samsung (Galaxy S23 ultra, zflip), iPhone, LG (g2,4,5,7,8, V60, Velvet), Motorola, Nokia, Google (Pixel 3,4,7,8,9), Sony Xperia, One plus and HTC. Many were international versions (until the 5G 'upgrade' that forced those models out).
The Xperia is the only phone in the bunch that can't make a phone call in my house, or anywhere else with a low signal, but where the Wi-Fi boost helps. The other phones have the same issue, but they just turn on "WiFi assist/WiFi calling" and they're great.
The reason for this is that the US variants of the Xperia line have Wi-Fi calling disabled. You can find it in the menu, but it's locked out. They have NOT changed it in the newer phones, and it's the chief complaint of Xperia users in the States. Digging around for answers reveals that Sony's website/help states "Xperia does not support WiFi calling IN THE US," though it's available and usable on the international networks.
I was told it was part of the agreement between Sony and Google/Android when the line was brought to market, and that they have no plans to change that.
I absolutely LOVE my Xperia for all the things it does, but I've been looking for a phone to replace it for a long time, because I do actually use my phone to make calls. The only reason I've been able to hold out so long is that we have a 'home phone' that's an LG phone with WiFi calling enabled, and I use that when I make calls from home. It's not ideal, but it gives me time to hunt for my next favorite phone.
