Uninstall Mcafee from iPad

Hi, I purchased a 5th gen iPad last month from My Tech Stop and have been very happy with it until recently. I have been getting pop ups from mcafee mobile security that the website I play video games on is “unsafe” and I need to renew my subscription. However, I never installed this app nor can I find anywhere on the web how on earth to delete this program. I wouldn’t mind but it usually pops up just as the game ends and I’m about to save my score…which it doesn’t because it can’t complete the save. Can someone tell me (other than to contact mcafee directly) how to delete this junk from the tablet? I would really appreciate your help as I thought this tablet was wiped clean before I received it and this is putting a kink in my game playing. Thanks for any help you can give me to solve this. Best regards, Kathy Biscello

Hey there, Kathy. That certainly sounds a bit frustrating, especially if the app is foiling your attempts at getting a high score!

I've not used McAfee Security myself, so I can't fully vouch for these instructions, but I was able to find the official McAffee support entry that lists out the steps required to uninstall the app on mobile devices.

How to remove the McAfee app from your iPad

According to the support entry linked above, removing the McAfee app on iOS is just like removing any other app:

  1. Return to your iOS home screen
  2. Press and hold the McAfee Security app icon until all your home screen icons start to wiggle
  3. Tap the minus sign that appears on the top left of the McAfee app icon
  4. Tap delete to confirm that you want to delete the app
  5. Press the home button to stop the icons from wiggling

(Removing the app on Android involves a few extra steps, as you must first remove the app from your Device Administrator list. However, this does not apply to you since you are on an iPad running iOS.)

Full factory restore

If removing the McAfee app isn't enough, you can always fully wipe your iPad and restore its factory settings. Just keep in mind that performing a factory reset will cause you to lose all your data if you don't back it up. So proceed with caution!

Once you've made sure to back up everything that you wish to preserve, you can perform a factory reset in just a few steps:

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Go to General -> Transfer or Reset iPad
  3. Tap Erase All Content and Settings

Hope this helps!

Thanks Will. Yes I saw the instructions you mentioned but the problem here is there isn’t an app on the Home Screen for me to delete! I am beginning to think that a factory reset is probably the only way to clear this pest from my tablet at this point but wonder if the machine was cleaned before I got it, and this happened about a month after I received and began using the ipad, that it might have sneaked in as a “free” trial when I set it up and potentially return again in another month.
I confess I’m not as knowledgeable about Apple products as I am with pcs so to reset the tablet worries me since I haven’t had that much experience doing this. But unless someone else can come up with a better fix, I may have to rely on the community here to help me reset my ipad (are your 3 steps at the end of your post all I need to do?) and fingers crossed, can save my scores without interference. Thanks again for your help.

Interesting about the McAfee app not showing up on your home screen. Perhaps it was removed from your home screen at some point, but never truly uninstalled. But don't worry, you should still be able to access the app (and uninstall it) from App Library!

  1. Swipe left on your home screen, past all of your existing home screen pages, to get to App Library
  2. Look for McAfee Security on this page, or use the search function at the top of the page to find the app
  3. Uninstall the app as normal from the App Library screen

As for resetting your iPad, the three steps in my previous reply are indeed the instructions to reset an iOS device. Apple really makes it that simple! However, I have to stress that you should perform a full backup before doing so -- otherwise, any data you wish to preserve will be lost.

I tried getting to the app per your instructions (never found the icon or the library) & even did a search in the App Store for the app library but again no luck. I can only bring up apps to download but not what’s already in the system. I did see some posts about a bogus mcafee pop up window that other people were trying to remove but all the fixes for that issue were for windows based systems.
I’ve gone into the settings and removed mcafee from the data logs there, restarted the tablet but it still managed to prevent me from registering one of the highest scores on my game…oh well I am only planning to use this tablet while I’m in the hospital to pass the time reading my blogs & play my games & then whenever I’m in a waiting room with WiFi to keep me busy so I don’t have anything important on this to back up. If I can’t find this app to delete, I’ll do the system reset & just add back all my sites. It’s more annoying that I’m losing out on whatever high scores I manage to reach. I’m not the best player but the games are challenging & take my mind off stuff. Thanks again for your help - it is much appreciated.????
