Fourth Generation Macbook Pros, Courting Controversy
Late 2016 saw the fourth generation MacBook Pro with some major (even somewhat controversial) design changes. Most notable was the removal of a majority of the ports and MagSafe 2 connector, now replaced by Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports and a single headphone jack. The dramatically redesigned MacBook Pro was thinner and lighter than previous models, with a brighter display, smaller bezels, and dramatically improved speakers. The Force Touch trackpad also saw an increase in size, now 46% larger than previous models. Along with a second-generation butterfly keyboard, Apple introduced the biggest change to the MacBook Pro line: a Touch Bar with Touch ID. The Touch Bar is a small, multi-touch OLED screen positioned at the top of the keyboard that replaces standard function keys.
MacBook Pro Security
The T2 is Apple’s second generation security chip found in all MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models after 2018. On the security side, the chip validates the entire boot process, verifying the bootloader, OS, and drives are all signed and approved by Apple. The T2 chip is also responsible for all encryption found on your MacBook Pro, something that helps keep the CPU free to handle other tasks. The T2 chip also features a secure enclave to store fingerprints used with Touch ID, preventing apps from directly accessing your fingerprint data. Security aside, the T2 chip also has an image signal processor to improve the FaceTime HD camera, and even handles audio processing for improved sound quality.
