Sell your Note 8 before August 9th to make the most money from it

July 17, 2018 • By Chris Chavez in Android
Samsung Galaxy Note 9

Samsung fans are clamoring for the release of this year’s Galaxy Note 9. It’s one of the biggest phone releases of the year and although all the details about the Note 9 haven’t been revealed, all of that changes when the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is officially announced on August 9th.

That’s an important date you’ll want to jot in your calendar, especially if you’ve been hanging onto an old Galaxy S8+ or Galaxy Note 8 you’ve been itching to sell. Why? Typically when a new phone is announced, it almost immediately sparks a drop in pricing for older models. Things continue to drop further once the phone is officially released and lands on store shelves.

In the case of the older Galaxy Note 8, you can expect used pricing to take a big dip as retail pricing is discounted and demand for the old model diminishes. This is something we’ve seen year after year with every new iPhone and something we documented in our “When will the iPhone 8 price drop” blog post.

With used prices soon likely to take a nose dive, it’s best to act quickly if you want top dollar for your old phone. To help you make a decision, let’s see how much you can get for the Note 8 if you sold it today.

How much is the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 worth?

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 was originally announced on August 23rd, 2017 at the introductory price of $950. In terms of pricing, not a lot has changed since launch day although it’s possible to find it at a slight discount from carrier stores like T-Mobile where the phone is currently being offered for $840.

Taking a look at used models being sold on the Swappa marketplace, the average price of the most recently sold Galaxy Note 8 (64GB) is currently hovering around $504. Less common 128GB and even 256GB models have been seen floating around the marketplace at one point, but are too rare to include in our overall averages.

When will the Galaxy Note 8 price drop?

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Price History

Pulling some additional data from the Swappa marketplace, we can track the Note 8’s steady decline in used pricing from the time the phone launched in September, to its most recent used price in June.

When it comes to Android devices, Samsung phones tend to hold their value pretty well and although we can’t say for sure how much the price will drop, based on previous data we’re expecting around 10-15% drop in pricing once the Galaxy Note 9 becomes official and the Note 8 becomes is discounted.

So while the Note 8’s used price is at its lowest point ever, those thinking about selling should act fast — before the Note 9 is released — in order to get the most out of it and avoid the impeding price drop.

Swappa vs trade-in sites

Just so you can see how much money is sitting in your old phone, we’ve decided to pull the current going rate for a handful of popular phones on the Swappa marketplace. For kicks, we’re comparing how much you can get by selling with Swappa vs trade-in services like Gazelle. You know, just so you can see where you can get more for your money (spoiler: it’s always Swappa).

Gazelle (trade-in)
Swappa (sell)
Galaxy S7 Edge $120 $238
Galaxy S8+ $250 $413
Galaxy Note 5 $80 $181
Galaxy Note 8 $335 $523
iPhone 7 Plus (32GB) $275 $446
iPhone 8 Plus (64GB) $400 $623

(Prices for unlocked models, fully functional, no major scratches or scuffs, no cracks on screen or body)

As you can see from the above chart, you can almost double your earnings by selling older devices with Swappa and for newer used phones, you’re looking at around $200+ more. Not a bad deal, especially when you consider that, unlike eBay, Swappa doesn’t have seller fees.

Don’t wait, sell your used phone today!

Even if you don’t plan on picking up the Galaxy Note 9, it’s still a great time to sell your old phone and replace it with something newer. Whether you’re looking to sell, buy, or both, Swappa is the perfect place for all your used gadgets.

The Swappa marketplace is the safest, most affordable way to find a gently used phone and because you deal directly with other users (no middleman), we’re the best tool at your disposal to help you find the best prices and get the most bang for your buck.

So before you waste any more time (and money), sell your used phone on Swappa today.
