How to Get a Phone Without a Credit Check

Published Oct 26, 2026 • By James Bradley in Buying & Selling Guides
Google Pixel, iPhone, Samsung Galaxy

If your credit is thin, new, or bruised, the carrier store is the wrong place to start: financing a phone there means a credit check. This guide covers the three paths that skip it (prepaid plans, buying a phone outright, and buying used), what each one costs over two years, and the pay-later deals that cost more than they look.

Quick Answer

You can get a phone without a credit check by pairing a phone you pay for upfront with a prepaid plan. Verizon Prepaid and AT&T Prepaid both advertise no credit checks, and budget carriers such as Visible and Tello sell month-to-month plans with no contract. The cheapest version is usually a used unlocked phone: on October 15, 2026, a 128GB Pixel 8 averaged $256 in Swappa sales, and a 128GB iPhone 13 averaged $247. Prices change daily, so check current Swappa prices for the model you want.

Real people approve listings before they go live. Standard US shipping is included in the price.

Why Carriers Run Credit Checks

A carrier checks your credit when it lends you the phone. The “$0 down” price on a new phone is really a 36-month installment loan at 0% APR, and the carrier wants to know you will pay it back.

Here is how the three big carriers word it on their own pages:

  • Verizon sets a device finance limit for each account based on credit history, and that limit caps how much phone you can finance.
  • AT&T says $0 down requires well-qualified credit, so weaker credit can mean a down payment.
  • T-Mobile says credit approval and a deposit may be required on its postpaid offers.

The service itself is the smaller part of the risk. Take the loan out of the picture, by paying for the phone yourself, and most of the credit question goes away.

Option 1: Prepaid Plans

Prepaid means you pay for each month of service before you use it. Verizon’s prepaid page promises “no annual contracts or credit checks,” and AT&T Prepaid says “no annual contract, no credit check.” You can also go to a budget carrier, often called an MVNO, that resells a big network’s coverage for less.

CarrierUnlimited plan price (October 15, 2026)Notes
Visible$25/moTaxes and fees included. Runs on Verizon’s network.
Tello$25/moSmaller plans from $10/mo. No contract. Taxes extra.
Mint Mobile$30/mo for the first 12 monthsNew customers pay 12 months upfront ($360). Smaller plans from $15/mo. Taxes extra.

Plan prices change often, and intro prices end. Check the carrier’s page before you sign up.

Watch out: If you buy the phone from a prepaid carrier, it is usually locked to that carrier for a long time. Verizon and T-Mobile prepaid phones generally unlock after 365 days, and AT&T Prepaid phones after 12 months of paid service. A phone you buy unlocked has no such wait.

Option 2: Buy a Phone Outright (New)

Paying full price up front avoids the loan, and with it the credit check. It also gets you a phone that works with any compatible carrier. Verizon, for example, unlocks a phone bought at full retail price automatically.

The obstacle is the size of the check. Apple lists the iPhone 17e from $699, and most current flagships cost more. If you have that cash, buying new works. If you don’t, a used phone covers the same need for a fraction of the price.

Option 3: Buy Used and Bring It

Buying a used unlocked phone and bringing it to a prepaid plan is the lowest-cost path with no credit check. You pay once, own the phone outright, and can move it to any compatible carrier when a better plan comes along.

Three checks before you buy:

  • Network compatibility. An unlocked phone still has to support your carrier’s network. Will This Used Phone Work on My Carrier? walks through it, and Using a Used Phone on an MVNO: Mint, Visible & More covers budget carriers.
  • eSIM. Many budget carriers activate by eSIM. eSIM and Used Phones: What to Know Before You Buy explains what to confirm.
  • A clean, paid-off phone. Run the IMEI before you pay. IMEI Check: What It Reveals About a Used Phone shows what the check catches.

On Swappa, phones must be fully paid off, carry a clean IMEI, and be free of activation locks before they can be listed.

Used phone prices are Swappa’s average sale prices for October 15, 2026, and they vary with condition and demand. Plan prices are each carrier’s published price on the same date. The used paths save roughly $450 over two years compared with buying new, and you still own a phone you can resell.

Pay-Later and Lease-to-Own Traps

When a credit check is the obstacle, two kinds of offers show up fast. Both deserve a careful read.

Lease-to-own. Lease-to-own companies let you take a phone home now and own it after a set number of payments. Progressive Leasing’s published terms are typical: a standard agreement runs 12 months to ownership, owning the item through the lease costs more than the retailer’s cash price, and even its cheapest early purchase option (90 days) costs more than the cash price, except in California. You pay a premium for the access.

Leases you never own. Apple’s new Apple Upgrade program leases iPhones through Klarna on 12- or 24-month terms. It uses a soft credit check, but an iPhone lease requires an AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon plan and cannot be used with a prepaid plan, and you do not own the phone at the end. You return it or pay to buy it. Apple is also ending its older iPhone Upgrade Program.

Pay later at checkout. Swappa’s payment page lists PayPal funding sources (bank account, debit card, credit card or PayPal balance), PayPal guest checkout with a card, and Stripe for select sellers. It does not list a buy-now-pay-later option. Swappa Payment Options: PayPal, Cards, and Stripe has the details.

If a plan’s total cost is not printed clearly before you sign, treat that as your answer. This section is general information to help you compare costs, not financial advice.

The Galaxy S24 sits just above this range at about $332 for 128GB. For more picks, including Android phones from other brands, see Best Cheap Phones Under $300 in 2026: iPhone and Android.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a phone without a credit check?

Yes. Prepaid service skips the credit check: Verizon Prepaid and AT&T Prepaid both advertise no credit checks, and budget carriers such as Visible and Tello sell month-to-month plans. Pair the plan with a phone you pay for upfront, new or used.

Do prepaid phones require a credit check?

Prepaid plans generally do not, because you pay for service before you use it. The credit check comes with financing a phone on a postpaid plan, where the carrier is lending you the cost of the device over 24 to 36 months.

What is the cheapest way to get a phone with bad credit?

Usually a used unlocked phone plus a budget prepaid plan. On October 15, 2026, a 128GB iPhone 13 averaged $247 in Swappa sales and a 128GB Pixel 8 averaged $256, and unlimited plans from Visible and Tello were $25 a month.

Are lease-to-own phones a good deal?

They cost more than buying outright. Progressive Leasing’s published terms say owning an item through its lease costs more than the retailer’s cash price, and even its 90-day early purchase option costs more than the cash price outside California. Compare the full lease total with the cash price first.

Will a used phone work with a prepaid plan?

Yes, if it is unlocked and compatible with the network the prepaid carrier uses. Check the phone’s network support and eSIM compatibility before you buy, and run an IMEI check to confirm it is clean and paid off.

Skip the Credit Check, Not the Phone

Pick a prepaid plan you can afford, then buy an unlocked phone you can pay for today. A used phone from the table above gets you there for a few hundred dollars, with no loan and no lock.
