Eventually got the iPad reset - the iPad was requiring a passcode to start up which I didn't have. Not sure how that happened nor does the seller. Got some instructions to force reset the iPad which weren't complete but eventually figured out how to do it and now the iPad appears to work fine. I rate the iPad excellent but not so much the seller.
