I think the apple warranty is effective from the date you bought the phone. Is it correct?

Apple warranty will start from the date of activation or first use of phone. There are discussions on discussion.apple.com saying same that warranty will start from date of activation. If you have further questions i think you can chat with apple support it shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes to confirm this. In past whenever I activated apple device warranty started from day of activation

Can I return after I open the box? How much does it charge for returning the item?

Since phone is brand new in a factory sealed box i am not offering a return after item is opened.
After box is opened item value will be down by nearly 50% u can check other swappa listing for that and then i have to pay fees and shipping which are also non refundable even if item is returned back to me.

Talk to apple support on apple site. Any new apple phone gets one year warranty from apple. You can chat with them to confirm.
