Can I use it at home on my wifi or does it need to be unlocked with a verizon account.

This tablet has WiFi capabilities so it does not need to be activated on Verizon service to be fully functional in your home. The only reason to activate it on Verizon services is if you wanted to use the tablet away from a WiFi connection.
