Opened and played with a little this is the model that is sold for AT&T but these may very well be unlocked devices as it works just fine with my tracfone sim, which does run off AT&T's network, so your aren't stuck with the default AT&T sim that came with it, not even sure I can find the default sim anyway. Point i'm trying to make is it isn't locked to that sim, so any AT&T or MVNO of AT&T should work minus Freedom pop sims which are data only sims, I haven't had any lock getting those to work so what ever sim you use must need a sms and phone number with it in order to use the sim for some reason. Only tested it with MVNO's that use AT&T's network.
