I could have still used this phone since the two networks are somewhat compatible (in fact, I unlocked it and used it on the T-Mobile network for a day to make sure it worked), but I got a hand-me-down S5 that I decided to go with instead.

Unfortunately, no. That version has a locked bootloader which prevents the installation of custom ROMs. I need the older 4.2 version: I337UCUAMDL and there is no way to downgrade without bricking the device. :(
