Have you had the crackling sound when it starts running hot?
Have you replaced any internal components?
I replaced the original 4gb of ram with 8gb of ram. In addition, there was an official Apple recall to replace a faulty graphics card for all 2011 MBPros, but Apple did the work and replaced the card as a part of the recall at no charge.
John - Just realized I inadvertently didn't answer the first of your two questions - No, this computer has never made any unusual sounds when running - hot or cold. The only thing I've heard when the computer is hot is the fan kicking on. Admittedly, MacBookPro fans aren't super quiet - but there's no clicking sounds or noises.
