You will have your own fully-paid-for latest-software-running phone to shop around for the best mobile deal that fits your needs. You can get much better deals with carriers such as Project Fi, Cricket, MetroPCS, etc. There are tons out there.

Warning to Verizon users: although this device has the radio to support all carriers including Verizon; Verizon, for business reasons, may not allow Nexus 5 to join their network unless that Nexus 5 is purchased from Verizon. Verizon's policy changes from time to time.
