Apple Watches look alike across a decade, and the details that set the price (generation, case size, material and cellular) are easy to get wrong in a listing. This guide covers every clue, including the engraving on the back for a watch that won’t pair, from the original Apple Watch to the Series 12, SE 3 and Ultra 4.

Quick Answer

On your iPhone, open the Watch app and tap My Watch > General > About. Model Name shows the series and whether it’s GPS or GPS + Cellular, Model Detail shows the case size and material, and tapping Model Number reveals the model number (an A followed by four digits) to match against Apple’s list. If the watch won’t pair, the case size and material are engraved on the back, and the serial number is inside the band slot. Then check what your exact model sells for before you list it or buy one.

Check Apple Watch Prices on Swappa

The Fastest Way: The Watch App on iPhone or Settings on the Watch

Apple’s Identify your Apple Watch instructions start on the paired iPhone. Open the Watch app, tap the My Watch tab, tap General, then tap About. On iOS 27, Apple’s own screenshot of that screen shows these lines:

Model Name: The series and version, such as Apple Watch Series 11 (GPS + Cellular).

Model Detail: The case size and material, such as 46mm Case, Aluminum.

Model Number: The part number, which begins with M, appears first. Tap it to see the model number, which begins with A. A 46mm Series 11 (GPS + Cellular) sold in North America is A3337, for example.

Serial Number: Unique to your watch, so a buyer can confirm the watch that arrives is the one in the listing.

On the watch itself, open Settings, tap General, tap About, then scroll down to find the serial number, and the IMEI on cellular models, according to Apple.

Swappa lists each case size as its own product, such as the Series 10 42mm and Series 10 46mm, so note the size along with the series before you list or shop.

Check the Case Back: Size, Material and Serial Number

If the watch won’t pair or power on, turn it over. Apple says the engraving on the back shows your case size and more. On Apple’s own photo of an original Apple Watch, the ring of text around the sensor names the case size (42MM CASE), the aluminum case, the Ion-X glass and the composite back.

The serial number is inside the band slot on the Series 1 and later, including every SE and Ultra. Remove a band and look in the slot. On the original Apple Watch (1st generation), the serial number is engraved on the back instead, according to Apple. Enter it on Apple’s Check Coverage site, checkcoverage.apple.com, to see the model.

The case size narrows the generation:

38mm or 42mm: the original Apple Watch through the Series 3.

40mm or 44mm: the Series 4, 5 and 6, and every SE.

41mm or 45mm: the Series 7, 8 and 9.

42mm or 46mm: the Series 10, 11 and 12.

49mm: every Ultra.

Watch for the 42mm trap. How to Tell

Every Apple Watch from the Series 2 on has GPS, so the question is whether yours also has cellular. Check these:

Model Name: The Watch app spells it out, such as (GPS) or (GPS + Cellular).

IMEI: Apple says the IMEI appears in About only on GPS + Cellular models.

The Digital Crown: Cellular Series 3 models have a red cap on the crown. Cellular Series 4 through Series 9 models, and the first two SE models, have a red ring. On the Series 10 and later and the SE 3, cellular models have a ring that matches the case color. Every Ultra is cellular and has an orange ring.

Case material: From the Series 3 on, Apple sold stainless steel, titanium and ceramic Series watches only as GPS + Cellular models, so a GPS-only Series 3 or later is aluminum.

Model number: GPS and cellular versions have different numbers. A 46mm Series 10 is A2999 as a GPS model and A3003 as a GPS + Cellular model in North America.

Apple Watch Cellular vs. GPS: Which to Buy Used covers carrier setup and whether cellular is worth paying for.

Look-Alikes That Trip People Up

These watches share sizes and shapes, so color, software and the model number do the work:

Series 7 vs. Series 8 vs. Series 9: All three come in 41mm and 45mm. Green or Blue aluminum means a Series 7, and Pink aluminum means a Series 9. If About shows watchOS 27, it’s a Series 9, because watchOS 27 dropped the Series 7 and 8. Only the Series 9 has the double tap gesture.

Series 10 vs. Series 11 vs. Series 12: All three come in 42mm and 46mm. Space Gray aluminum rules out the Series 10, and Light Gold or Dark Bronze aluminum or a ceramic case means a Series 12. Otherwise, use the model number: a 46mm GPS model is A2999 for the Series 10, A3333 for the Series 11 and A3584 for the Series 12.

Ultra vs. Ultra 2 vs. Ultra 3 vs. Ultra 4: All are 49mm titanium with an Action button. The first Ultra came only in natural titanium, so a black Ultra is a 2, 3 or 4. The Ultra 3 and 4 add Apple’s wide-angle OLED display and satellite features. Outside mainland China, the model numbers are A2622 or A2684 (Ultra), A2986 (Ultra 2), A3281 (Ultra 3) and A3579 (Ultra 4).

SE (2nd generation) vs. SE (3rd generation): Both come in 40mm and 44mm. The SE 3 has an always-on display and an aluminum back, while the SE 2’s display turns off when your wrist is down and its back is nylon composite. The SE 3 came only in Midnight or Starlight, so a silver SE is an SE 2 or the first SE.

Getting this right matters when you price a watch. Swappa sale data from early October 2026 shows a 45mm Series 9 averaging about $194, against about $139 for a 45mm Series 8 and $96 for a 45mm Series 7. A 46mm Series 10 averaged about $234 and a 46mm Series 11 about $314. A 40mm SE 3 averaged about $204, against about $112 for a 40mm SE 2, and the Ultra 2 about $346, against about $491 for the Ultra 3 and $221 for the first Ultra. Apple says this erases the watch and removes Activation Lock, so the next owner can set it up. How to Sell a Used Smartwatch for the Most Money covers photos, pricing and shipping. Listing is free, and selling fees are lower than other auction-site fees: Swappa charges a 3% seller fee on your Ask Price, and you pay payment processing (PayPal is 3.49% + $0.49).

If you’re buying, ask the seller for a screenshot of the Watch app’s About screen and make sure the Model Name, Model Detail and model number match the listing, including the case size. Real people approve Swappa listings before they go live, and if a watch arrives as something other than what was advertised, you’re entitled to a refund.

Pairing it with a new phone? What iPhone Do I Have? Model Name shows the series and whether it’s GPS or GPS + Cellular, and Model Detail shows the case size and material. If the watch won’t pair, check the case size engraved on the back and the serial number inside the band slot.

How do I tell what size my Apple Watch is?

The Model Detail line in the Watch app shows the case size, such as 46mm, and the size is also engraved on the back of the case. Apple Watch sizes run 38mm and 42mm through the Series 3, 40mm and 44mm for the Series 4 to 6 and every SE, 41mm and 45mm for the Series 7 to 9, 42mm and 46mm for the Series 10 and later, and 49mm for the Ultra.

How can I tell if my Apple Watch is GPS or cellular?

The Model Name in the Watch app says GPS or GPS + Cellular, and only cellular models show an IMEI in About. On the watch, a red cap or red ring on the Digital Crown marks a cellular Series 3 to 9 or a first- or second-generation SE, and a ring matching the case color marks a cellular Series 10 or later or SE 3. Every Ultra is cellular.

How do I identify an Apple Watch that won’t pair or turn on?

Read the case size and material engraved on the back, then remove a band and read the serial number inside the band slot, or on the back of an original Apple Watch. Enter the serial number at checkcoverage.apple.com to see the model. If it won’t pair, it may still have Activation Lock on, so ask the previous owner to remove it.

How do I tell an Apple Watch SE 2 from an SE 3?

Both come in 40mm and 44mm, but the SE 3 has an always-on display and an aluminum back, while the SE 2 has a molded nylon composite back. The SE 3 came only in Midnight or Starlight. The difference shows in price: a 40mm SE 3 averaged about $204 on Swappa in early October 2026, against about $112 for a 40mm SE 2.

Conclusion

The Watch app’s About screen identifies any paired Apple Watch in seconds, down to its case size, material and cellular status. For a watch that won’t pair, the case-back engraving, the band slot serial number and a few tells like color and the Digital Crown ring narrow it down fast. Once you know the exact model and size, you can price it against real Swappa sales, list it, or confirm that a listing is the watch you’re paying for.

Sell Your Apple Watch on Swappa

Shop Used Smartwatches on Swappa

The Watch app on your iPhone names your exact Apple Watch, its case size and its material in seconds.
