Auto-brightness is supposed to be helpful, but when it’s acting up it gets old fast. The good news is there are a handful of settings that control this behavior, and adjusting them takes about two minutes.

Why Your iPhone Changes Brightness Automatically

iPhones have two separate systems that adjust screen brightness automatically. The first is Auto-Brightness, which uses the ambient light sensor to adapt the display to your surroundings. The second is True Tone, which adjusts the color temperature and brightness to match the ambient lighting conditions in the room. Both can make the screen feel like it’s doing things on its own.

There’s also a feature called Attention Aware Features — on Face ID phones, the TrueDepth camera watches whether you’re looking at the screen. If you look away, it dims to save battery. If your phone can tell you stopped paying attention, the screen pulls back.

iPhone Deals

Turn Off Auto-Brightness

A lot of people look for auto-brightness in Display & Brightness, but it was moved a while back. Here’s where it actually lives:

Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness

Toggle it off. From there, your screen will stay at whatever brightness level you manually set in Control Center. Keep in mind — with auto-brightness off, the phone won’t adjust for very bright outdoor conditions, so you may need to crank it up manually when you step outside.

Disable True Tone

True Tone shifts the white point and overall brightness of the display to match ambient light — this can make the screen look warmer and dimmer in certain lighting. If you want consistent, predictable brightness regardless of the room you’re in, turn it off.

Settings > Display & Brightness > True Tone — toggle it off.

You can also toggle True Tone directly from Control Center by long-pressing the brightness slider.

Turn Off Attention Aware Features

If your screen dims when you stop looking at it — even briefly — Attention Aware Features is likely the culprit. Here’s how to disable it:

Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Attention Aware Features — toggle it off.

This is especially noticeable when you’re reading an article and your eyes drift off-screen for a second. The phone interprets that as inattention and starts to dim. Turning it off means screen dimming will only be controlled by the auto-lock timer.

Find an iPhone

Check Auto-Lock Settings

Unrelated to brightness sensors, but worth double-checking: if your screen is dimming and then locking faster than you’d like, the auto-lock setting controls how quickly the display times out. Go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock and set it to something longer — or Never if you’re always plugged in.

Low Power Mode Can Dim Your Screen Too

When Low Power Mode kicks in (automatically at 20% or 10%, or manually), iOS reduces screen brightness as one of its battery-saving measures. If your brightness keeps pulling back without any obvious reason, check your battery level and see if Low Power Mode is on. You can toggle it in Settings > Battery or through Control Center.

Night Shift and Scheduled Display Changes

Night Shift warms the screen color at a scheduled time each night — while it doesn’t reduce brightness directly, it can make the screen look noticeably dimmer and more orange. If your screen suddenly shifts tone in the evening, this is probably why. Check it under Settings > Display & Brightness > Night Shift.

Reset All Settings If Nothing Helps

If your brightness is still behaving unpredictably after working through the steps above, a settings reset can clear out any configuration that’s gotten into a weird state. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings. This won’t delete your apps or photos — it just brings all settings back to factory defaults. You’ll need to re-pair Bluetooth devices and set up Wi-Fi passwords again, but it’s a clean slate for display behavior.

Is the Sensor Itself Broken?

On rare occasions the ambient light sensor itself can fail or get blocked — thick cases and screen protectors that cover the sensor (usually at the top edge of the phone near the earpiece) can interfere with readings. If you’ve turned off auto-brightness but the screen is still doing unexpected things, try removing your case and screen protector and see if the behavior changes.

If the sensor is physically damaged, that’s a hardware issue that typically requires service. If your current iPhone is giving you too much trouble and you’d rather just move on, you can pick up a well-priced used iPhone on Swappa — phones are verified by real sellers and you’ll know exactly what you’re getting.

Brightness issues are almost always software-related and fixable in settings. Start with Auto-Brightness and Attention Aware Features — those two changes alone solve it for most people.

Shop iPhones

Your iPhone’s screen keeps dimming when you’re in the middle of something — or cranking up to full blast when you just want to read in bed.
