When it fails, the troubleshooting path isn’t obvious because there are multiple places things can go wrong: your carrier plan, iOS settings, the connecting device, or just a software glitch that a restart will fix. Here’s how to work through each one.

First, Check Your Carrier Plan

Personal Hotspot isn’t available on every cellular plan. Some carriers require a separate hotspot add-on, some cap the data you can share, and a handful of budget plans disable it entirely. Before you start troubleshooting the phone itself, it’s worth confirming that your plan actually includes it.

Log into your carrier’s app or website and check your plan details. Look for terms like “Mobile Hotspot,” “Data Sharing,” or “Tethering.” If hotspot isn’t listed, that’s your answer — you’ll need to upgrade your plan or add it on. Most major carriers offer it, but it’s often not included in entry-level plans.

If your plan includes hotspot but the feature seems greyed out or missing on your iPhone, your carrier settings may need an update. Go to Settings > General > About and wait a few seconds. If a carrier settings update is available, a prompt will appear. Install it and check whether Personal Hotspot becomes available afterward.

Shop iPhones

The Basic Toggle Fix

If your plan supports hotspot and the feature is accessible, the most common fix is simply toggling it off and back on. Go to Settings > Personal Hotspot and flip the switch off, wait five seconds, then flip it back on. This refreshes the hotspot broadcast and clears whatever state it got stuck in.

While you’re in that menu, check the Wi-Fi Password field. Sometimes the password gets corrupted or set to something unexpected after an iOS update, causing connecting devices to fail authentication silently. Tap the password field, clear it, and set a new one that’s at least 8 characters. Then forget the hotspot network on your laptop or other device and reconnect fresh with the new password.

Also check that Airplane Mode is not active. This one is easy to miss — if Airplane Mode is on, Personal Hotspot won’t broadcast even if the toggle is enabled. Swipe down from the top right to open Control Center and confirm the airplane icon is grey, not orange.

Try All Three Connection Methods

Personal Hotspot supports three ways to connect: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB. Most people only try Wi-Fi, but if that’s not working, the other two often will — and USB in particular is the most reliable method when you need a stable connection for work.

For USB tethering: plug your iPhone into your laptop with a cable. On a Mac, the connection happens automatically once you unlock the iPhone and trust the computer. On Windows, you may need to install Apple’s mobile device drivers first (they install alongside iTunes). Once connected, your computer should show the iPhone as a network interface.

For Bluetooth tethering: pair your iPhone with your laptop via Bluetooth first (if they’re not already paired). Then on your laptop, right-click the Bluetooth icon, find your iPhone in the connected devices list, and select Connect to Network or Join Personal Hotspot depending on your OS. Bluetooth hotspot is slower than Wi-Fi or USB, but it’s useful in situations where Wi-Fi is flaky.

Problems on the Connecting Device

If your iPhone’s hotspot is broadcasting and other devices can see it but can’t connect — or connect but have no internet — the issue may actually be on the connecting device rather than the iPhone.

On a Mac or PC, forget the hotspot network entirely and reconnect. Old saved network credentials can cause silent authentication failures. On macOS, go to System Settings > Wi-Fi, click the hotspot network, and choose Forget. On Windows, go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi > Manage Known Networks and remove it. Then reconnect from scratch.

If you’re connecting another iPhone or iPad, make sure that device’s Auto-Join is enabled for the hotspot network (Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the info icon next to the network) and that it’s not trying to join an old network with the same name. Instant Hotspot — the feature that lets Apple devices see each other’s hotspot automatically without a password — requires both devices to be signed into the same iCloud account and have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on.

Buy an iPhone

Restart Both Devices and Reset Network Settings

If you’ve worked through everything above and the hotspot still won’t cooperate, a restart is the next step. Restart both your iPhone and the device trying to connect. This clears in-memory network state on both ends, which is often all it takes.

If a restart doesn’t fix it, the nuclear option on the iPhone is to reset network settings. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This clears all saved Wi-Fi passwords, paired Bluetooth devices, and VPN configurations — so have those handy before you proceed. After the reset, re-enable Personal Hotspot, set a new password, and try connecting again. This resolves the vast majority of persistent hotspot issues that aren’t carrier-related.

One more thing worth trying if nothing else works: toggle cellular data off and on. Hotspot runs over cellular, and sometimes the data connection itself drops into a bad state that hotspot can’t recover from on its own. Go to Settings > Cellular and toggle Cellular Data off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on. Then try hotspot again.

Still Not Working?

If you’ve confirmed your plan includes hotspot, reset network settings, restarted both devices, and tried USB, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth — and it still won’t work — it’s time to contact your carrier directly. Hotspot restrictions can sometimes be applied at the account level by the carrier rather than the phone, and a carrier rep can often flip a switch on their end that no amount of iPhone troubleshooting will fix.

If you’re on an older device and finding that cellular performance overall has degraded — slow data, spotty hotspot, weak signal in places that used to be fine — it may be worth looking at a hardware upgrade. Newer iPhones support more cellular bands and handle modern network standards significantly better than models a few years old. Used iPhones on Swappa are a cost-effective way to move to a current model without paying full retail.

Find an iPhone

Here’s How to Get It Connected Personal Hotspot is one of those features that works seamlessly until the exact moment you really need it — at an airport, in a hotel room, or sitting in a coffee shop with unusable Wi-Fi.
