Not sure if you're still in the market for a phone or not, but thought I should mention this. This phone was never under contract, it was bought outright. But either way, it's my understanding that the major cell companies lock the phones for 2 years when they are under contract and then once the 2 years are up the phone is released electronically via IMEI code. If for some reason the phone isn't unlocked you can bring the phone to a network provider and have it unlocked once they check the IMEI number to verify it's no longer under contract. This info might be useful in your search for a cell phone. Good luck!
